Third National Conference on Whiteness
Chicago, IL
November 1998

The Third National Conference on Whiteness took place over 3 days (November 6-8) at the University of Chicago. The local organizing group was Partnership Against Racism, now taking part in the planning for a third year. The conference drew around 200 people, which was down from the previous year. This partly reflected a late start by the planners, who were feeling pressed by the demands of planning and publicizing the event each year. Nonetheless, the conference was energizing. It was the most freewheeling of all the four conferences in the series, with animated discussions and debates taking place among participants.

CSWAC later wrote a brief report on the conference.

The archive of the conference website has more details.

CSWAC co-founder, Jeff Hitchcock, gave a speech at the conference.

The conference received some press coverage:

-- The Chicago Tribune ran a short article.
-- Another Chicago Tribune article featured Lowell Thompson of Partnership Against Racism.
-- An article in a Socialist publication, New Ground 62 gave the conference a good review.
-- One critic had a problem with the "white" issue released by conference sponsor and campus-based newspaper publisher, Chicago Ink.
